Dynamic vs Static QR Codes: Which Should You Use?

Every QR code generator eventually asks you the same question: static or dynamic? It sounds like a technical detail, but it is the single most consequential choice you make about a QR code, because one of the two options is permanent in a way people rarely expect.

The short version: a static QR code has its content baked into the printed pattern forever. A dynamic QR code points to a short redirect link, so the destination stays editable after printing and every scan can be measured. Neither is universally better. This guide explains exactly how each works and gives you a simple rule for choosing.

How a static QR code works

A QR code is just data drawn as modules (the little squares). A static QR code encodes your actual content in those modules: the full URL, the WiFi network name and password, the contact card, the plain text.

When a phone scans a static code, everything happens on the phone. The camera decodes the modules, reads the content, and acts on it directly. No server is involved, nothing is looked up, and nobody is notified that a scan happened.

That gives static codes two real strengths:

  • They work forever, unconditionally. There is no service that can shut down, no subscription that can lapse, no redirect that can break. A static WiFi code printed in 2026 will still join the network in 2036 if the password hasn't changed.
  • They work offline. WiFi credentials, contact cards, and plain text don't need an internet connection at all.

And one enormous weakness: the content can never be changed. If the URL moves, the menu changes, or you made a typo, every printed copy is wrong forever. The only fix is to reprint everything.

How a dynamic QR code works

A dynamic QR code does not encode your destination. It encodes a short redirect URL, something like:

When someone scans it, their phone opens that short link, the redirect service looks up where the code currently points, records the scan, and forwards the phone to the destination in a fraction of a second. The person scanning never notices the hop.

Because the printed pattern only contains the short link, the destination lives on a server you control through a dashboard. That changes everything:

  • Edit after printing. Point the code at a new page anytime. Every printed copy follows instantly. (More on how that works.)
  • Scan analytics. Each redirect is a measurable event: when it happened, what country and city it came from, what kind of device scanned it. (How scan tracking works.)
  • Pause and resume. Turn a code off during a promotion gap without breaking it.
  • Fix mistakes. Typo in the URL? Change it. Campaign page not ready? Point it at a holding page today and the real page tomorrow.

The tradeoff is dependency: a dynamic code only works while the redirect service answers. Which makes your choice of provider part of the decision.

One underrated row in that table: density. A static code gets visually busier as its content gets longer, and busy codes scan worse, especially when printed small. A dynamic code always encodes the same short URL, so it stays clean and scannable no matter where it eventually points.

The simple rule

Ask one question: will this code be printed, and could its destination ever change?

If yes to both, use a dynamic code. Printing is what makes mistakes expensive. Menus, flyers, posters, table tents, business cards, packaging inserts, event signage, vehicle decals: all of these outlive the URLs they point to more often than people expect.

Use a static code when the content is truly permanent or purely functional:

  • WiFi access. The network name and password are the content. No redirect needed, works with no connection.
  • Contact cards. A vCard saves straight to the phone.
  • One-off digital uses. A code in a slide deck or an email that will be irrelevant next week doesn't need editability.

If you're unsure, choose dynamic. You can always leave a dynamic code pointing at the same URL forever, but you can never make a printed static code editable.

The catch to watch for: whoever answers the scan

Everything good about a dynamic code comes from the fact that a service answers the scan. Everything risky about one comes from the same fact. That service can be switched off, and it can also be used.

It can be switched off. Free dynamic codes are often trials, and when the trial ends the printed code starts showing an upgrade page to everyone who scans. It can be monetised. Because every scan passes through that service, it can serve a page of its own before forwarding the visitor: a full-screen ad, usually with a countdown. This is most common on free and entry-level plans. Static codes cannot do this, because nothing sits in the middle to do it with, and that is the real trade you are making when you choose a dynamic code. What about QR codes on retail products?

There is a third option this article would be incomplete without. If your QR code is going on retail product packaging, the code that gets scanned at a store checkout, you want a GS1 Digital Link QR code rather than a general-purpose dynamic code.
