GS1 Barcodes for Sam's Club: Why Scan & Go Raises the Stakes
Most retailers scan your barcode in two places you never see: a receiving dock and a checkout lane. Both are staffed by people who deal with a bad scan every day and have a workaround for it.
Sam's Club added a third place. With Scan & Go, the member scans your package themselves, on their own phone, standing in the aisle. There is no cashier to key the number in and no receiving clerk to sort it out. If the barcode on your pack does not resolve to the right item record, the person holding the product finds out, and what they experience is your product not working.
That is the reason to take item data accuracy seriously here specifically. The failure is member-facing.
What Sam's Club expects
Sam's Club is part of the Walmart family and its supplier requirements are distributed through supplier onboarding rather than published openly, so your buyer and Sam's Club's supplier team are the authority for your category. The underlying standard is the same one the rest of US retail runs on: GTINs issued from your own GS1 Company Prefix, with GS1-compliant labelling at case and pallet level.
Two expectations are worth planning around before you have a purchase order.
The UPC on the package must match the item record. This is the Scan & Go dependency. It is also the thing most likely to drift, because packaging changes and item records are usually updated by different people at different times.
Club packs are their own products. A Sam's Club configuration is rarely the same pack you sell elsewhere. If the count or size differs, it is a distinct trade item and needs its own GTIN. It is not your retail GTIN with a note attached.
Audit item data at onboarding, and again after every packaging change
Treat this as a recurring task rather than a one-time setup step, because the common failure is not a wrong number at launch. It is a right number that stopped being right.
The things that quietly break a match:
- A pack count change that reaches the printer but not the item record.
- A net weight or size revision on a reformulated product.
- A new case configuration introduced for a promotion.
- A GTIN reused for a successor product instead of a new one being assigned.
That last one deserves emphasis. GTINs are not meant to be recycled between different products. Reusing one creates two different physical items claiming the same identity, which is precisely what a member's phone cannot resolve.
Set a habit: any time artwork changes, re-check the item record before the new packaging ships.
Getting your GS1 barcodes
1. Licence a GS1 Company Prefix
Register at gs1us.org. Entry pricing is $250 for up to 10 GTINs with a $50 annual renewal, with larger capacities priced higher. Count your club configurations and case codes before choosing a tier, since club packs consume numbers faster than people expect. The single GTIN at $30 that GS1 US sells for one-product brands is not the route here: it covers one item and is not available for mixed cases.

2. Assign GTINs per configuration
One GTIN per sellable configuration, plus a separate 14-digit case GTIN for each shipping carton configuration. GS1 US Data Hub handles check digits, and our GTIN validator will confirm any number you assigned by hand.
3. Get the symbols right at each level
The consumer club pack carries a UPC-A. The shipping case carries its case GTIN. Pallets carry a Serial Shipping Container Code in a GS1-128 label, which is how a physical pallet is matched to the advance ship notice describing it.
Applying a consumer UPC to a shipping carton instead of a case code is a real error rather than a cosmetic one, because the receiving scan then reports a single unit where a full case arrived.
Barcode quality matters more when a phone is doing the scanning
A retail scanner at a checkout lane is a purpose-built imager, held at a consistent distance, under consistent lighting, operated by someone who scans thousands of items a day.
A member's phone is none of those things. It is handheld, at whatever angle and distance, under warehouse lighting, sometimes on a curved or shrink-wrapped surface, operated by someone who will give up after two tries.
The practical implications for your artwork:
- Do not shrink the symbol below its specified size to win space for design.
- Keep real quiet zones on both sides of the barcode.
- Keep genuine contrast. Dark bars on dark packaging is the recurring failure.
- Avoid placing the symbol where shrink wrap will distort or gloss it.
- Keep the human-readable digits legible underneath.

Do not use resold barcodes
Cheap individual barcodes sold online are resold numbers from a GS1 Company Prefix licensed to someone else.
The registry names another company. Retailers validate GTINs against GS1's global registry, and that lookup returns the actual licensee.
Shared namespace. Other buyers of the same prefix hold adjacent numbers and you have no visibility into their use of them.
You cannot renew a licence you do not hold. If the original holder lapses, your numbers stop being valid.
At club-store volumes, one reprint costs more than years of a GS1 licence.
Where 2D barcodes fit
The industry is transitioning from one-dimensional barcodes to 2D codes, coordinated by GS1 under Sunrise 2027.
To be precise about what that is: GS1 US describes Sunrise 2027 as an industry milestone rather than a regulatory mandate, with the goal that point-of-sale scanners are capable of reading a 2D barcode and extracting the GTIN. You are not required to remove your UPC, and GS1 anticipates a long period of dual-symbol packaging.
There is a neat fit with the Scan & Go model here. A GS1 Digital Link QR code holds a structured web address built on your GTIN rather than a bare number. A register can read the GTIN out of it, and the same symbol, scanned by a member's phone, can lead somewhere you control: usage instructions, warranty registration, a bulk-pack recipe, a reorder page. One code, two very different audiences.
Your existing GTINs are the foundation. What you add is a resolver that decides where each code points and lets you change that without reprinting.
