QR Code Checker

Find out what a QR code really does before you print it again, or why it stopped working. See whether it is static or dynamic, every step its link takes, who runs that link, and whether anything is shown to people before they arrive.

Or compare a provider with SunriseQR

Which kind of code do you have?

Every QR code is one of three kinds, and the kind decides whether it can expire, show ads or be fixed after printing. The checker above tells you which one yours is.

01

Static

The destination is stored in the pattern itself. Fine for a link that will never change.

Scanyour page
  • Never expires
  • No ads possible
  • Can't be edited after printing
  • No scan stats
What SunriseQR makes
02

Dynamic

A short link forwards each scan to your page, so you can change where it goes after printing.

Scanshort linkyour page
  • Editable after printing
  • Scan stats
  • Relies on the service staying on

Every SunriseQR dynamic code is this kind, and never stops forwarding, on any plan.

03

Dynamic, with a page in the middle

The short link shows its own page first. That is where ads, countdowns and upgrade prompts reach the people scanning.

Questions

How can I tell if a QR code is static or dynamic?

Look at what is inside it. A static code contains the destination itself: the website address, the WiFi password, the contact card. A dynamic code contains a short link on someone else's server, which forwards to the destination. Upload the code above and the checker shows which one you have and every step the link takes.

Can a static QR code expire?

No. A static code is just data printed as a pattern, and no service is involved when it is scanned, so there is nothing to switch off. It stops working only if the destination itself disappears, for example a website that is taken down.

Why did my QR code stop working?

Almost always because it was dynamic and the service behind the short link stopped forwarding it: a free trial ended, a subscription lapsed, or an account was closed. The pattern on the page is fine; the server it points at changed its answer. The checker shows where the chain now ends.

Can I fix a dynamic QR code that has already stopped working?

Only through the provider whose short link is printed in it, usually by reactivating the account. Nobody else can change where that link goes. If that is not an option, the fix is a new code, and the lesson is to choose a provider that does not expire codes.

How does the checker know whether a code shows ads?

It follows the link the way a phone does and records each response. A clean redirect answers with a forwarding instruction and no page at all, so there is nothing to put an ad on. If a page is served on the way to the destination, that page is where ads or a countdown can appear, and the checker flags it.
