GS1 Barcodes for Instacart: How Your UPC Actually Gets There
Most marketplace barcode guides answer the same question: which field do I paste my UPC into? Instacart does not work that way, and searching for that field is why brands get stuck.
You do not upload a product to Instacart. Retailers do. Instacart builds its storefronts from inventory files supplied by the grocers it partners with, and your product appears because a retailer who stocks it sent a file that includes it. Your GTIN is not something you submit. It is the join key that decides whether the retailer's line item and the catalog content about your product are recognised as the same thing.
Understanding that changes what you should actually do.
What Instacart's catalog requires
Instacart's own catalog documentation is public and specific. The required identifier on a catalog and inventory file is a field called lookup_code, described as the unique code representing each product, such as a PLU or a UPC.
Two things follow from that wording.
It is the retailer's file, not yours. The lookup_code arrives from the grocer's system. If their record for your product carries a wrong or outdated UPC, that is what Instacart receives.
A PLU is acceptable too. For loose produce and similar items, a PLU code does the job. This is a grocery platform, and not every item on it is a packaged good with a UPC.
Instacart's documentation also describes a Universal Catalog, where items can inherit attributes from trusted sources including content service providers and consumer packaged goods partners, rather than every retailer having to describe every product from scratch.
Where a brand actually has leverage
Since you are not the one submitting the item, your influence runs through two channels.
The UPC itself. Whatever number is printed on your packaging is the number that will end up in retailer systems and flow through to Instacart. If it is a GS1-issued GTIN registered to you, everything downstream can resolve it correctly. If it is a resold number whose prefix belongs to someone else, every system that tries to look it up gets a confusing answer.
Content syndication. Instacart's documentation describes coordinating with a content service provider as the way brand owners update product content at scale. That is the route for images, product names, sizes, and other attributes. It is keyed on the UPC, which is why the identifier has to be right before the content work is worth doing.
The order matters. Correct, self-owned GTINs first. Content syndication second. Doing it the other way round means syndicating good content against an identifier that cannot be trusted.
Get your identifiers right
1. Licence a GS1 Company Prefix
Register at gs1us.org. Entry pricing is $250 for up to 10 GTINs with a $50 annual renewal, and larger capacities are priced higher. 2. One GTIN per sellable configuration
Every flavour, size, and multipack is a distinct product with its own GTIN. Two products sharing a GTIN is the specific defect that makes an online grocery catalog show the wrong image, the wrong size, or the wrong product entirely.

3. Keep the number stable
Once a GTIN is in circulation it is referenced by retailers, distributors, and catalog systems you have no relationship with. Do not recycle it for a successor product. Assign a new one and let the old one retire.
Why resold barcodes cause visible problems here
On a physical shelf, a barcode with a questionable prefix mostly works until someone checks. In an online catalog assembled from many sources and joined on the identifier, it is more exposed.
Lookups return the wrong company. GS1's registry resolves the prefix to its actual licensee, not to you.
Collisions surface as wrong content. If another product shares your number, catalog systems have two candidate descriptions for one identifier, and there is no reliable way for them to choose yours.
A lapsed prefix breaks quietly. If the original licensee stops paying GS1, nothing announces it. The number simply stops validating.
Own the prefix. It removes an entire class of problem you would otherwise spend years chasing.
Where this is heading
The industry is moving from one-dimensional barcodes towards 2D codes, coordinated by GS1 under Sunrise 2027.
To be accurate about it: GS1 US frames Sunrise 2027 as an industry milestone rather than a regulatory mandate, with the goal that point-of-sale scanners are capable of reading a 2D barcode and extracting the GTIN. Nobody is required to remove a UPC, and GS1's guidance anticipates a long dual-symbol period.
There is something specific in it for a brand selling through online grocery. A shopper who receives your product in a delivery order and scans the code on the pack reaches your page, not a search results screen. Your GTINs are the foundation. What you add is a resolver deciding where each code points, changeable later without new packaging.

The Instacart-specific advice is short: stop looking for the field to paste your UPC into, because there isn't one for you. Make sure the number printed on your packaging is a GS1-issued GTIN registered to you, that every configuration has its own, and that your retail partners' records match your packs.
