Dynamic QR Codes vs GS1 Digital Link: Which Belongs on Packaging?

Two kinds of QR codes can be edited after printing, track their scans, and send customers wherever you want. One of them can also be rung up at a supermarket checkout. Picking the wrong one for the job is invisible on the day you print, and expensive the day a retailer scans it.

Here's the decision, made simple.

The one-question test

Will this code be printed on a retail product's packaging, where a store might scan it at checkout?

Everything below is the reasoning behind that rule.

What the two codes have in common

For a person scanning with a phone, the experience is identical. Both codes redirect through a resolver to whatever destination is currently configured, which means both are:

  • Editable after printing. Change the destination anytime; every printed copy follows. (How that works.)
  • Trackable. Scans by day, place, and device. (How scan tracking works.)
  • Reliable. The printed URL never changes; only where it leads does.

Because the phone experience is the visible part, it's easy to conclude the two are interchangeable. The difference is in the part the phone doesn't show you: the URL itself.

What's actually printed in each code

A regular dynamic QR code encodes an opaque short link:

A GS1 Digital Link QR code encodes the product's GTIN, its global product identifier, inside a structured URL:

https://id.sunriseqr.com/01/00614141123452

That 01/00614141123452 is the same number that lives in a traditional barcode. And that changes who can use the code. A retail point-of-sale scanner doesn't follow links; it reads the printed pattern, extracts the GTIN from the URL structure right there at the register, and rings the product up. No internet round-trip, no resolver, just the number in the ink.

The short link has no GTIN to extract. To a checkout scanner it's noise. To a phone it's fine. That asymmetry is the entire decision.

Why this matters more every year

The retail industry is in the middle of the Sunrise 2027 transition: retailers worldwide are upgrading checkout scanners to accept 2D codes, and GS1 Digital Link is the format that makes one printed code work as both the consumer experience and the checkout barcode. Brands adopting it are collapsing two codes (a UPC for the register, a marketing QR for the customer) into one.

Which means a product package is the one surface where a generic QR code, however well made, is the wrong tool. Not broken, just underqualified for where it's printed.

"Can I upgrade my printed codes later?"

The question everyone asks, so let's be precise.

Printed codes never convert. No provider, ours included, can turn an already-printed short-link code into a checkout-scannable one, because the GTIN has to be in the printed URL and ink doesn't update. This isn't a platform limitation; it's how scanners work.

But nothing breaks, and the switch is cheap. Your printed dynamic codes keep redirecting forever. When you're ready for retail (or for Sunrise 2027), the next packaging print run carries the GS1 code, the same way packaging updates always ship: with the next print run. The practical takeaway: if you know a product is headed for retail shelves, start with the GS1 code and skip the interim print run entirely. That's the truly future-proof choice, and it loses you nothing, since it's just as editable as any dynamic code.
